The trend of skipping the bars for your birthday is steadily on the rise. People are over the repetitiveness of meeting up for drinks at a recommended bar that's easy for all your friends to get to after work. So what to do for your birthday if you're totally over bar culture or just want a sober occasion? Here's some of my favorite ideas!
1: Game Night
Nothing is better than hosting a game night with some of your closest friends and family. There's so many ways to customize the evenings events to your own liking in the comfort of your own home. For my 29th birthday I got a bunch of snacks and non-alcoholic beverages from Trader Joe's. I also encouraged others to bring snacks and drinks they preferred especially if they were alcoholic.
When it came to the games I had so many in mind! I became such a huge fan of SMOSH Games on YouTube and I was so entertained by all of the games they played. My birthday party became the perfect excuse to invest in my board/card game collection. I decided on Herd Mentality, Rabble and Ultimate Werewolf for the evenings competition. 3 games was excessive so maybe just do 2.
2: A Fun Theme
I didn't start throwing birthday parties for myself until I was 23. I was the type of person that didn't care about celebrating my birthday. But for my 23rd I became inspired and brainstormed what I wanted to do. I decided to just throw an apartment party and have video games on the TV... but everyone had to show up in a wig.
The excitement of everyone coming through the door with a fantastic wig on their head truly made for a hysterical evening. Everyone cursing each other out playing Mario Kart in sensible bobs and 90's supermodel blowouts brought me immense joy. After that I did themes every year like Double Denim and Hot Topic.
3: Classes & Workshops
If you're a busy bee and just have no time to plan something on your own, just let others provide the vibe for you. There are so many workshops and activities being hosted in your area by small businesses and makers. You can participate in pottery classes, painting classes, mixology classes and more. But my favorite thing is a candle making class (obviously)
We transformed our Brooklyn production studio into a candle making speakeasy where we host weekly classes for people who love exploring fragrances. When a group of friends come to the class to celebrate a friends birthday makes the experience so much fun.
You get to choose your own candle vessel, up to 2 fragrances, and craft your very own soy wax candle with the help of our instructors. Plus we give you a $5 gift certificate to our gift shop so you can build your very own goodie bag.

We hope this guide helps you when you're making your next birthday plans that won't be just going to bar.
